The Los Angeles Unified School District Amateur Radio Association (LAUSD ARA) is intended to be a supplemental communications support organization during a disaster or emergency situation. Members provide this capability on a voluntary basis by being licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and utilizing radio frequencies authorized to them by the Federal Government.

Any licensed Amateur Radio Operator is eligible for membership in the ARA. Members are requested to participate in weekly drills (nets) and periodic emergency simulations.

The LAUSD ARA has the capabilities to provide high quality local communications via VHF and UHF radio repeaters as well as long distance communications support using HF radios.

The LAUSD ARA can supplement the District's communications capabilities during declared emergencies via fixed stations as well as mobile and hand held units.

The resources of the LAUSD ARA provide great flexibility in assigning personnel to various locations and performing a variety of communications duties.
